Artist's concept of a Hypergiant Star.

Artist's concept of a Hypergiant Star. Hypergiant stars are the most massive known. They can weigh more than 250 times the mass of the sun. They display fierce stellar wind and intense radiation that propagates far into space, making these stars visible across vast distances. They live fast and die quickly. Generally, the more mass, the faster they die. They may end their lives in great explosions known as supernovae. These explosions are brighter than the entire galaxy combined, for a brief moment. Vast amounts of gas is blown off into space, which will create new stars one day. Supernovae are also the place where heavier elements than iron are created.
