Baby fox know as a kit, sitting in field of grass and flowers
American red foxes are very common in all of North America. They live in tall grasslands, wooded areas, deserts and mountains. They mostly prefer the woods where they can roam without being seen. The male foxes are dogs and females are vixens. The males tend to have a longer snout. Breeding season starts in early winter. Dens are found in many places both with an entrance and an exit. Some foxes make homes under sheds in your neighborhood backyard. This is where the mother stays warm and prepares for her family of kits. Litters are usually two to six per family. When kits are born, their fur is brown and they have beautiful blue eyes. Within a month, the fur changes to red and they become much more playful. Fox kits stay close to the den. A parent will come back with a meal for all to share. As kits mature, they spend more time out of the den and can be found rolling in the grass and fighting with each other, just like siblings do. Adult foxes are very affectionate and when they return to the den, kits will approach the adult with touches to the face, looking for attention. Foxes are well groomed and spend lots of time keeping themselves and their young clean. During the summer, they spend less time in the den and venture further into the woods where their parents teach them to hunt. They spend hot summer evenings lounging in tall grass. As autumn arrives, they are out on their own living a wild life in nature.
