Dispensing elephantiasis drugs. Researcher noting the dosage of drugs he is dispensing to treat elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis). Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms spread by blood-sucking insects. The worms block the lymphatic system causing fluid accumulation (oedema) and associated swelling of the lymph vessels. Repeated infections result in massive enlargement of the affected part of the body, most commonly the limbs or scrotum. The researcher is dispensing diethylcarbamazine and ivermectin as part of a trial to discover the effectiveness of this drug combination at killing the worms. Photographed in Papua New Guinea.
