The District of Columbia War Memorial, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, is a unique tribute to the residents of the District who died serving in World War I. Unlike most monuments on the Mall, this is not a national memorial but a local one, dedicated specifically to DC's fallen. Completed in 1931, the memorial was designed by architects Frederick H. Brooke, Horace W. Peaslee, and Nathan C. Wyeth. It takes the form of a circular, domed temple in the Doric order, measuring 47 feet high and 44 feet in diameter. The structure is built primarily of Vermont marble, with a base of Milford pink granite. The memorial's simple yet elegant design features an open-air rotunda supported by 12 fluted Doric columns. Inside, a large marble tablet is inscribed with the names of the 499 Washington, DC residents who lost their lives in the war. The dome above is designed to shelter a band, as the memorial was intended to serve as both a tribute and a bandstand for concerts. Situated in West Potomac Park, between Independence Avenue and the Tidal Basin, the memorial offers a quiet space for reflection away from the more frequented monuments. Its location provides easy access to other nearby memorials, including those for World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. As a local monument on the National Mall, the DC War Memorial serves as a reminder of the impact of global conflicts on local communities and preserves the memory of DC residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I.
