They were grouped intothree conferences: one Norwegian, the Chicago Confer-ence; and two Swedish, the Mississippi (afterwards Illi-nois) and the Minnesota.* The Swedes and Norwegians * These conferences were not organized now, but had existed befoie. At the time of the separation the Swedish part of thesynod numbered 46 pastors, 110 congregations, 57church edifices, and 16,960 communicant new conferences were now added, New York, Iowa,and Kansas, and the boundaries of all the conferenceswere definitely fixed. In 1886 the Nebraska Conferencewas organized andseven 3Tears later theColumbia and Califor-nia Conferences wereadded, making eightconferences in all. The Synod has animmense home mis-sion field embracingat present (1906)nearly all the statesand territories of theUnion and most ofthe provinces and ter-ritories of greater part ofthis work is donethrough the missionboards of the variousconferences, the central mission board of the synodhaving charge of such fields as lie outside of the boundsof the
