BRITISH GIRL - ESCAPED FROM BRUSSELS - NOW IN THE WAAF - This 19 year old British subject, Helen Shea, born in Brussels, escaped from Belgium with her family when the Germans invaded the Low Countries. The Sheas remained in Brussels until two hours before the German tanks rumbled through the city, which had already been heavily bombed. They took suitcases and marched with the King's Own Scottish Borderers retreating from Louvain. Sometimes they were lucky enough to get lifts on ambulances or army lorries, sometimes they trudged along with the pitiful stream of women, children and old people rendered homeless by the German invasion. They slept where they could by the roadside that was often machine-gunned. They shared bully beef and condensed milk with kind-hearted British lorry drivers. Eventually they reached France, and Helen, her feet bandaged, took train from Calais and thence by boat to England. Today she is Aircraftwomen 2nd Class in the and drives and service car, averaging about 1,000 miles a week. Her father is chargehand in a Northern aircraft factory.
