Medium grade invasive ductal breast cancer. Light micrograph of cells in a tissue sample from an invasive ductal breast cancer (malignant tumour). This specimen has been assessed for factors such as the appearance of the cell nuclei. This tumour has intermediate-grade nuclei (score 2), with a slight variation in the nuclear size and shape. Punctate (dotted) nucleoli are present. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Symptoms include painless lumps in the breast, a dark discharge from the nipple, and an indentation of the nipple. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. Once a cancer has spread, the prognosis is poor.
