Mr. Fillmore selected a new cabinet, with Daniel Webster atits head, and, from an earnest desire to conciliate tho warring sections, andrestore harmony to the Union, gave the influence of the administration in lavorof the compromise measures which had been reported in the seriate : theywere finally passed in September of the same year.
