The pennant displayed with the flags indicate the direction of the wind ;red, easterly winds (from northeast to south); white, westerly (from south-west to north). The pennant above the flag indicates that the wind is ex-pected to blow from northerly quadrants; below, from southerly quadrants. By night a red light will indicate easterly winds and a white light abovea red light will indicate westerly winds. The system of weather, temperature and rain signals displayed through-out the country is distinct from the cautionary and storm signals, the latterbeing principally for the information of the maritime interests and are dis-played at the principal ports of the Great Lakes and on the Atlantic, Pacificand Gulf coasts.
