The Romans possessed merely a por- tion of that country ; the Saxons scarcely penetrated at all into Wales, or not beyond the county of Monmouth; the Welsh long re- sisted the superior power of the English under the Norman kings ; and it was not until late in the thirteenth century that the Principali- ty was annexed to the crown of England. We therefore expect to find more decided specimens of the native productions of our island: nor are we altogether disappointed. The principal and the most valuable portion of the cattle of Wales are the middle horns.
