Map of Beatus

Beatus was a Spanish priest who died in 798. He is credited as the originator of a world map whose style was copied from the 10th to the 13th centuries. This world map, modeled on the Beatus world map, is oriented with the East (Oriens) at the top and dates to around 1050. It was drawn in the St. Sever Aquitanian monastery and is considered the most monastery carefully executed and most detailed of all the Beatus maps.
