The Black Hawk was the flagship of Union naval commander Admiral D. D. Porter, and it took part in Union General Sherman's descent of the Mississippi in preparation for the battle for Vicksburg. At the time of the Vicksburg Campaign (November 1862-July 1863), the city was under the control of the Confederates. On July 4, 1863, Vicksburg fell to the Union forces and so, too, did control of the Mississippi.
