Although the department is one of the most active government offices in the Sinjar sub-district, farmers lacked a collective voice to advocate for their needs. In late spring, SHEO consulted with local farmers to identify common needs, helping establish a coordinating committee to increase access to much-needed services. Parallel to this, USAID/OTI provided the agricultural department with a tractor and equipment to increase their responsiveness to farmers’ needs and furnished a hall that the committee is now using to process farmers’ requests for services. Additionally, the committee recently prepared a detailed report on the needs of Qairawan’s farmers for the agricultural department to raise with Ninewa’s Directorate of Agriculture.
