It was transformed when gold was discovered (at Ballarat in 1851) in the district and became a wealthy metropolis. It is now ranked in the top three 'World's Most Livable Cities'. It is also home to the World’s largest tram network. It is recognised as Australia's 'cultural and sporting capital' and is home to some of the nation’s most significant cultural and sporting institutions. The gold rush brought wealth and Melbourne became a major finance centre, home to several banks, the Royal Mint to Australia's first stock exchange in city became the second largest in the British Empire (after London) and the richest in the world. Melbourne hosted five international exhibitions.
