Munitions Ship Scuttled off Staten Island. This image depicts the Panamanian ship El Estero, pumped full of water and sunk 200 yards off Staten Island by Coast Guardsmen, risking their lives to prevent a harbor disaster. The ship was loaded with 1,300 tons of munitions when it caught fire in the spring of 1943.
