Lord Kitchener army recruitment. Front cover of the 5 September 1914 issue of the London Opinion magazine, showing British Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener asking for recruits to fight in the war with Germany. Kitchener led efforts to expand Britain's armies following the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). The volunteer armies of over two million ('Kitchener's Army'), died in large numbers during the Somme Offensive in 1916. This cover was designed by British graphic artist Alfred Leete (1882-1933). The image was used for recruitment, but was not used as widely as popularly believed. After the war, it became an iconic symbol.
