Statue of Jean de la Valette, Grand Master of the Knights of St John, in Valletta, Malta


Jean Parisot de la Valette (or de Valette) was Grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta from 1557 to 1568. Under his leadership the Knights of St John withstood the Ottoman Turks during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. He also founded the city of Valletta, though he did not live to see its completion.
