She lived with the license that the Regency had introduced into morals. Highly educated and endowed with a lively imagination, and a passionate character, she had affairs with distinguished men of the time, first with the Maréchal de Richelieu, then with Voltaire, who spent several years with she at Cirey, finally with d'Alembert.
