Cell signalling, illustration. Signalling molecules (orange spheres) secreted by one cell bind to receptors on the membrane of a nearby cell. This triggers a biochemical chain of events inside the cell in a process called signal transduction. Further signalling chemicals (green) in the cell may initiate responses such as a changes in metabolism or gene expression. These processes allow cells to respond to changes in their environment. Cell communication between nearby cells is known as paracrine signalling, and internal cell communication is known as intracrine signalling.
