Wells, of the Missouri Bo- tanical Garden, gave a talk at the club and in it urged the greenhouse men to grow orchids, as the demand for them is increasing in St. Louis every year, Henry Berning, who is in San An- tonio, Tex., with Mrs. Berning, who is sick, writes that the patient has shown little improvement since their arrival there. Charles Young, of the C. Young & Sons Co., is acting in his father's place owing to the illness of Mr. Young, who is head of the company. They had a big week in plants and seeds at the branch store on Waterman avenue. Wm. C. Young says they have been rushed to the limit all week. Dr. William Trelease, former head director of the Missouri Botanical Gar- den, has been appointed professor of botany in the University of Illinois. Mr. Trelease has been traveling in Europe on botanical work since leaving the garden. He succeeds T. J. Burrill. The professor is a member of the St. Louis Florists' Club. Dr. George Moore, head director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, at- tended the National Flower Show in New York. Jacob Schramm was acting director in his absence. Hugo Gross, of Kirkwood, says he re- ceived a letter from Anton Zvolanek, who was in New York last week, say- ing that he would be here the latter part of this week.
