The Ouvrages du Libron, flood defences at the intersection of the Canal du Midi and the river Libron, France

At this point the river Libron intersects with the Canal du Midi. The river is prone to flooding and would flood the canal system if allowed. Normally the river flows beneath the canal, but at times of flood, the canal is closed and the river flow diverted across the canal. The river is diverted into two separate streams, so even in flood, it is possible to allow a canal boat to traverse each section of the river, while the flood water is carried across the canal on the other branch of the river.
