In 1669, the son of surgeon Thomas Smith,of Exeter, England, later first landgrave and governor ofCarolina, and (Schenckingh) Smith, a beau-tiful German. He came to America in July, 1684, withhis parents and several others of a family group. Smithsfirst wifes name is not known; his second was Mary Hyrne,whom he married in 1713. It seems unfortunate that we may not know somethingof the personality of his wives and their Influence upon hishome, for by his first wife he had three sons and sevendaughters, and by the second marriage three daughters andseven sons. He died 9 May, 1738, in the seventy-fifth yearof his age, and was buried at his plantation
