THE URINARY ORGANS OF WOMEN 129 Catheterization of Ureters.—For this proce-dure prepare the regular cystoscopic outfit, and, inaddition, the following articles (Fig. 60): Ureteral searcher. Ureteral catheters. Thumb and forefinger of a large-sized rubberglove. Sterile test-tubes. Small glass graduate. The ureteral catheter is made of a combinationof silk and rubber; it should possess a slender tipand a good-sized eye below the tip; sizes 5, 6, and7 are generally used. Each catheter is providedwith a wire stilet and must invariably be wired whennot in use; a hollow metal rod forms a convenientreceptacle for the catheters. Prepare the catheters by boiling for two minuteswithout and two minutes with the stilet. Boilin a long instrument boiler; never bend or coil tliecatheter; lay a towel on the bottom of the boilerto prevent the catheter from sticking to it. Seeto it that the wire is pushed well into the tip of thecatheter, and that it does not project through theeye: after boiling, lift the catheters out upon asterile towel.
