HMS Daedalus and the Great Serpent. HMS Daedalus was a 32-gun fifth rate frigate launched in 1780. On August 6, 1848, the frigate Daedalus encountered what its captain, P. M'Quhae, later described in a published official report (M'Quhae 1848a) as an enormous serpent, at least sixty feet long. This occurred in the South Atlantic, some 300 miles from the coast of present day Namibia.
