Shortly afterward he invented and patented a seed-sowingmachine designed for sowing rice, which he adapted subsequently to sowing wheat in 1844 he removed to St. Louis and for a year worked as a clerk in a dry-goods thus engaged he employed a skilful mechanic to construct his seed-sowing machines,which found a ready sale. Interest in them soon became so wide-spread that in 1845 gave up his other occupations to devote his whole time to their improvement and sale,.
