Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers camp, Lapley, c 1860. Voluntary army regiment in training. Later Prince of Wales's Regiment 1881.

Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers camp, Lapley, c 1860. The Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers were part of a large volunteer force of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps, created as a popular movement in 1859. Here they are taking part in a training camp near Lapley in North Staffordshire. Originally highly autonomous, the volunteer units became increasingly integrated with the British Army after the Childers Reforms in 1881. The Rifle Volunteers were incorporated into The Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment in July 1881 and had their headquarters at Hanley.
