. A great year Lord Glanely's horses. is so superb that itwould have been a sad mistake not to afford him hischance as a sire. Sky-rocket was a son of Sunstarand Maid of the Mist, thus obtaining the blood ofthe beautiful Amphion together with that of thegreat mare Sceptre. He is half brother to theOaks winner, Sunny Jane, and to the TwoThousand winner, Craig-an-Eran. Unhappily thecareer of Sunstar was cut short at an early broke down in the Derby, never being ableto run again ; but the son of Sundridge and Dorishad accomplished enough when carrying Mr. J. black jacket, red cap, firmly to establish hisfame, and his success at the stud has been extraordinary. Like so many famous horses Sunstar first came outin the New Stakes at Ascot, the date 1910. He wasconsidered to have a good 5 to 1 chance, though therewere two better favourites, Seaforth at 5 to 2 andFeramoz at 3 to 1, and the former took the race froma French colt, M. E. de St. Alarys Nerestan. Atthe Newmarket First July Meeting Sunstar ran for 180. HE, SKY-ROCKET, AND TRECLARE the Exeter Stakes, one of the earliest six furlong racesof the season. It hardly seemed probable at the timethat the colt would stay, and a multitude of two-year-olds who win easily at five furlongs find the additionalfurlong too much for them. Sunstar, however, lastedwell and secured the race by a neck from MajorEustace Loders Canvas-back, Mr. H. P. WhitneysBorrow unplaced. This American colt was supposedto be the chief danger to Sunstar, and with good cause, his merit being so considerable that he won the MiddlePark Plate from Seaforth and Pietri. I believe alsosince his repatriation he has gained a speed record inthe United States. Sunstars two-year-old career, itwill be seen, was an example of what at roulette arecalled intermittences, a defeat being always followedby a success. In the Lavant Stakes at Goodwood hewas beaten by Mr. S. B. Joels St. Nat, an anticipatedresult. Then he won the International Two-Year-OldPl
