ALEXANDER II. RESTORING OSMAN PASHA'S SWORD.—The only serious check the Russians met was at Plevna, where Osman Pasha, Turkey's ablest soldier, threw his troops into the strong fortress, and resisted the Rus-slut advance for several months. When starvation forced him to surrender, the Czar himself restored Osman's captured sword as a tribute to his loyalty and courage.
