"The White House" c. 1898, at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. This is the north side of this American icon, facing Pennsylvania Ave. Note the Conservatory at the right end of the building. This was replaced by the brand new West Wing in 1902. No flag on the flag pole. Note the fancy old style of iron fence on the porch. The photo was taken by Mr. Jarvis, whose studio was at 135 Pennsylvania Ave. Jarvis had been taking other photos of the White House for decades, both inside and out. At the building's right side, note the glass conservatory. The White House's first plant growing conservatory was build for President Lincoln. Over the years, more were added and they were reconstructed from wood to metal. Before 1899, there were about 5 conservatories, for different flowers and plants for different uses. In 1902, the West Wing was build onto the White House, eliminating much, or all, of the conservatory spaces. The White House has been the home of every President since John Adams, in 1800.
