Newark Castle Keep
Built in 1130 by the Bishop of Lincoln, Newark castle was further developed over the following centuries. Strongly linked with the Robin Hood fable, this is where King John, the much maligned brother of Richard the Lionheart died. During the English Civil War Newark was a Royalist stronghold and never fell to the Parliamentarians. After King Charles capture at nearby Southwell the King ordered the surrender of Newark and the castle was dismantled by the Parliamentarian forces to prevent it from being used for a rebellion.
