HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, moored at Wood Wharf, Greenwich, with local fishing boats in the foreground. Image converted to monochrom
Illustrious was originally commissioned as a light aircraft carrier in 1982. In November 2006, she was moored at Wood Wharf, near to Deptford and Greenwich, for several days. This symbolic visit to Greenwich - the location for the Royal Navy College until 1998 - represented part of a tribute to Navy personnel, serving both in the First and in the second World Wars. Illustrious herself served in the aftermath of the Falklands war, primarily to impose a defensive presence around the disputed waters. Hence she relieved the battle- weary aircraft carrier Invincible of responsibility for this protective role - whilst essential repair and renovation work was carried out on the island. Apparently, the ship is referred to as 'Lusty' by members of the crew.
