German troops salute during a flag raising ceremony on the balcony of Sarajevo city hall. The nazi occupation of Greece (to bail out Mussolini's botched attempt) and of Yugoslavia (to crush resistance) were quick but took over a month. It makes interesting speculation to imagine if they had not been sidetracked in the Balkans and had launched Barbarossa a month earlier. Would Moscow have fallen before the onset of winter?
