J., isplanning one of the most elaborate electric railways forindustrial development that has yet been scheme, which involves the linking together of thesix trunk-line railroads that now terminate separatelyon the west bank of the Hudson River opposite NewYork City, has recently been outlined in detail in a re-port by F. Van Z. Lane, resident engineer. Its estab-lishment is subject to action of the New Jersey StateLegislature on a bill initiated by the Jersey City Cham-ber of Commerce to permit the building of the railroadby the city. The informal approval of the New JerseyPublic Service Commission has already been obtained. The plan comprehends the building of the network oflines shown in the accompanying illustration by fundsraised from the sale of twenty-year city bonds. Thecost of the 5 miles of main line and 16 miles of sidings. INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT RAILWAY FOR JERSEY CITY—PROPOSED MAIN ROUTE AND SIDINGS which will be installed is estimated at $1,500,000. Inreturn for this expenditure there will be directly servedan area of more than 15,000,000 sq. ft. of ground whichwill possess exceptional advantages for warehouse andmanufacturing sites owing to the extraordinary facili-ties for handling freight shipments to or from any partof the country. This is expected to increase the taxablevalue of the real estate in this city by $50,000,000. Op-eration will probably be conducted by individual capital,the plan being to lease the road, if necessary, at a rentalwhich will equal the cost of the obligation of the city,including interest and sinking fund, as the indirect re-turn to the community will be so great as to precludeany need for the investment to pay direct profit.
