Narrowing of coronary artery. Coloured angiogram of a heart showing a narrowed coronary artery - a major cause of heart attack. The narrowing is the pinched part of the black artery just left of upper centre. This condition is caused by build up of fatty deposits and dead cells on the inside wall of the artery. Abnormal clots sometimes form on top of these deposits, blocking blood flow to the heart's muscle. This leads to the death of part of the heart (myocardial infarction) and consequent heart attack. Blood vessels were high- lighted on this X-ray angiogram by introducing an X-ray-opaque dye directly into the heart through a plastic catheter tube passed along a vein.
