The ceiling is therefore panelled in natural wal-nut, with caissons of gilt arabesque design. The walls abovethe dado of American walnut are hung with silk of old-soldtone; on the floor are laid immense Oriental carpets, leavingthe waxed boards visible round the edges. The window cur-tains are cloth of gold, with a rich design in red velvet ap-plique-work of Portuguese origin. The smaller under-curtainsor blinds are of thin straw-color silk, and the wood-work of thewindows is gil
