The Snake Boat Race is held every August and is a major tourism attraction. the backwaters offer an economical means of transit, and local trade is carried on by inland navigation. Fishing and fishcuring and coir are important industries. Kerala houseboats are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kerala.
