Earphones using neodymium magnets. Earphones are in-ear headphones, consisting of small transducers that reproduce sound relayed to them through a wire (plug at upper right). The sound is produced by the action of a magnetic on a diaphragm, causing it to vibrate with the required frequency. In this case, the magnets are made of the lanthanide (rare earth metal) element neodymium (Nd). This element is used because it produces powerful magnetic fields, allowing small magnets to be used.
