Hooded men dressed in white "Battenti" repeatedly beat their chests with sharp sponges. they whip themselves on the back. Every seven years in the town of Guardia Sanframondi in the province of Benevento, the seven-year penitential rites are held in honor of the Madonna dell'Assunta, in which hooded men dressed in white divided into "Flagellants" who whip each other on the back and "Battenti" who repeatedly beat their chest with sharp sponges until blood comes out, walking through all the streets of the town.
