The Economy of Combined Railway andLighting Plants. The above idle i- not particularly novel and the subject is onewhich has been practically settled in many medium and smallsized cities. If the proof of the pudding is in lie: eating, then alarge number of combined railway and lighting plants must havean agreeable taste in their palates. The subject is, therefore, pre-. sented not in the light of a new discovery, but rather as a discus-sion of what has already been accomplished. Electric lighting and railway enterprises are much more closelyallied than appears on the surface, and it 1- rather strange thatthere are so many plants still operating separately. Both types ofplants are dependent upon the home marketing of one and thesame product. The raw material, method of manufacturing anddistribution of the manufactured product are exactly the same in both cases. The only differenceis in the class of customers. Inthe one case the product in theform of electric lighting is mar-keted to the upper and generallywell-to-do classes and in theform of power to businesshouses, while in the other casethe product is marketed in asomewhat different form to themasses who utilize the cheaptransportation facilities affordedby electric cars. It seems to thewriter, therefore, that there ismuch more logic in the com-bining of railway and electric
