View W of Tomen y Rhodwydd motte and bailey castle, Llandegla, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, showing N bank & surrounding ditch of the bailey where it joins the motte (centre) & a causeway crosses the ditch. Raised in 1149 by Owain Gwynedd during his campaign to annex part of Powys. In 1157 it was taken by Iorwerth Goch ap Maredudd of Powys who burnt the motte's timber tower & the bailey stockade. King John's forces restored & ditched the castle during the 1212 campaign against Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great). Strategically sited close to the meeting of the Nant y Garth (A525) & Horseshoe (A542) passes.
