Life and work in India; an account of the conditions, methods, difficulties, results, future prospects and reflex influence of missionary labor in India, especially in the Punjab mission of the United Presbyterian Church of North America . ngs and beliefs as these many of these *0r jug—that is, age, period. 248 LIFE AND WORK IN INDIA outcastes have been brought under Christian instruction and throughthis to a saving knowledge of Christ. But are not these people, morally speaking, the most depraved part ofthe whole community? By no means. Caste in India has nothing todo with morals. This is shown where both classes con-tend with each other, on an equal footing, in schools and other places, and is proved also by the fact that they have been kept so long in astate of subjection ; although this subordination has been partly thecause, as well as the effect, of the inferiority mentioned, and maytherefore be removed in time by a course of training. But, as far asmorals are concerned, they are equal to any other great class in BritishIndia and superior to some of these
