Interior of St Benet’s Church

St Benet’s Church in the parish of St Benedict is adjacent to Corpus Christi College and attached to its Old Court via a gallery. Its close association with the college is reinforced by the fact that the college was known as Bene’t College for long periods of its history. The church has a remarkable Anglo-Saxon Tower in a fine state of preservation. There is a gravestone in the churchyard of John Mere one of the esquire beadles (bedells) of the university in the reign of Queen Mary. There is an annual sermon in his honour, Mere’s Sermon organised by Corpus Christi College on behalf of the University. The grave of the renowned Thomas Hobson, Caryer , famous for his “Hobson’s Choice, this horse or none” is found in the churchyard. Today the church is a lively place with a large congregation.
