Victorian Walled Garden, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Built in 1870, fell into neglect and re-opened 1999
Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle, in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. The abbey was founded for Benedictine Nuns who fled Belgium in World War I. As the years passed the garden fell into decline until the Benedictine nuns began an extensive programme of restoration in 1995. In 2000 the restored garden was opened to the public and won the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in 2001.
