John Hunter (1728-1793), Scottish surgeon and anatomist, seated at his writing table surrounded by books and specimens from his collection. Part of the skeleton of the Irish giant Charles Byrne is at top right. Hunter was born in Scotland and studied surgery in London, England. He served as a surgeon in Portugal during the Seven Years' War. This resulted in 'A Treatise on the Blood, Inflammation and Gunshot Wounds', correctly stating that bullets lodged in the body should be left alone unless endangering life. In comparative anatomy his dissections of numerous animal and human cadavers led to important findings on blood circulation, teeth, embryology and digestion. Hunter is regarded as the founder of a scientific approach to surgery. This 1857 illustration, by Joseph Hogarth, is based on a 1786 painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
