Menstrual cycle paralleling the ovarian cycle (at the top) with the cycle of the endometrium (evolution of the uterine mucous membrane, in the middle) and the different phases of the cycle (at the bottom). - The ovarian cycle (at the top) : inside the ovary, evolution of the ovarian follicles carrying the ovocyte (follicular phase ; primordial follicle, primary follicle, secondary follicle and tertiary follicle), ovulation (day 14 ; Graafian follicle, which is a mature tertiary follicle, ejecting the ovocyte II it contains), corpus luteum (luteal phase ; the Graafian follicle emptyied of its content, or dehiscent follicle, degenerates into corpus luteum secreting estrogen and progesterone ; it is a follicular atresia). - The uterine cycle (in the middle) : follicular phase (or proliferative ; thickening of the endometrium and development of the uterine glands), luteal phase (ou secretory ; maturation of the endometrium, secretion of glycogen by uterine glands for the possible nutrition of the futur embryo), menstrual phase (either shedding or menstruation ; degenerescence of the uterine mucous membrane). - The menstrual phases (average duration of the cycle : 28 days, at the bottom) : periods (days 1 to 5), follicular (days 6 to 18 ; with ovulation occuring from the days 14 to 18), luteal phase (days 19 to 28).
