Grey clouds view saltmarsh with water pool to sea ice expanse with flock of oyster catchers at the edge of the sea, St Annes, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some place the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes in December 2010 displayed large areas of land-fast blocks of sea ice, several centimetres thick. The view looks across an area of saltmarsh with water pool to a flock of oyster catchers on an expanse of sea ice at the edge of receding seawater, between Fairhaven and St Annes.
