Heinolds' at twilight in 2006 before the start of large construction behind it. Heinolds' First and Last Chance Bar, also known as Jack London's Rendezvous in Jack London Square, Oakland, California, has been in continuous operation since June 1883. Jack London reportedly wrote notes for Sea Wolf and Call of the Wild at his favorite table in this saloon. John Heinold lent Jack London the money for tuition at the University of California. Johnny Heinold and The First and Last Chance Saloon are referenced seventeen times in London's novel John Barleycorn. Heinolds' is also famous for its tilting floor. During the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the pilings underneath the saloon settled in the mud. Efforts to shore up the floor were unsuccessful. Heinolds' is a designated National Literary Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
