In these mountains there are found granite and otherigneous rocks, as well as Carboniferous and Cretaceouslimestones. The Chinati mountains are volcanic. They are not capped withhard layers, but are usually covered with the waste broughtdown from the adjoining slopes. This is a region of sudden contrasts. From the sandyplains mountains quickly rise, sometimes alone, some-times in groups ; here sharp summits are outlined againstthe sky, there great rounded domes; again flat-toppedmesas appear, with steep scarps and deeply cut ravines. RELIEF AND SOILS 29 Salt basin lies for the most part between the Delawaremountains, a southeastern extension of the Guadalupemountains, and the Sierra Diablo. Its interior drainageis collected in a series of salt lakes.
