. Report on the scientific results of the voyage of Challenger during the years 1873-76 : under the command of Captain George S. Nares, , and Captain Frank Turle Thomson, d that, in view of F. E. Schulzes statements as to theontogeny of Sycandra raphanus, this latter supposition is more plausible. At anyrate the peculiarity in question is to be considered as a famdy character, the more soas there is no possibdity of putting my Eilhardia in the genus Teichonella as a species, the differences in the spiculation and exterior form being too considerable. The diagnosisof this genus will be as follows :— 1 Ann. and Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 5, vol. ii. p. 39, 1878. 2 Brit. Spongiad., vol. i. p. 165, 1864. 3 Mr. Carter (loc. cit., p. 35) calls the Family Teichonia and Teichonellida? indifferently. In order to renderit uniform with the names Asconida?, Syconidse, and Leuconidse, I propose to call it Teichonidse. REPORT ON THE CALCAREA. 31 l/tihardia, n. gen. Teichouidse of calyciform shape; that surface which carries pores supported bytriradiate and minute acerate spicules, that which bears oscula supported by largeacerate spicules. EILHARDIA LEUCETTA AMPHORiSCUS. TEICHONELLA SYCON LEUCOSOLENIA /QLYNTHUS I have now finished my account of the genera; their conjectural mutual phylogeneticaffinities may be expressed graphically by the above diagram. The first half of my task is therewith accomplished, and the best conclusion I cangive to it will consist in signalising the merits of the investigator whose name has been 32 THE VOYAGE OF CHALLENGER. so frequently repeated in these pages. Of Prof. Hasckels statements many have provedto be erroneous, but it must not be forgotten that it was his Monograph that called forthand facilitated later investigations, and if we are forced to agree to a certain extent withthe judgment of M. Barrois upon the work just mentioned, that limagination y a tropsouvenl pris la jdace de lobservation scientifique et froide,
