Small-brained species have smooth brains and are near the one-sectored sphere-lines. Humans, elephants, and whales have highly fissured brains and are between the eight-sec- tored and 16-sectored sphere-lines. According to these results we should expect the amount of fis- surization in the brains of different species to be determined almost entirely by the size of the brain. Elias and Schwartz (1971) mea- sured the relationship, and their results are presented in Fig. 4. It is as orderly as anticipated; a quantitative analysis leads to addi- tional insights into the evolution of fissurization and suggests some.
